I went to the Chinese New Years' show a year or two later and can't recall now if it was Kaiser or SF Civic but distinctly remember conversations about the Dead looking into playing China and Bill Graham mentioning stuff re the same. Did I hallucinate the same or anyone else recall such talk right around the time just before everything jumped a few levels (unfortunately in most regards) with the Touch video?

BD,
I too remember talk of going to China to play at the Great Wall. Talk circulated for a few months but then it fizzled. I think there were just too many political issues to overcome so they pulled the plug on it. The timeframe you mention is about where I remember it as well. Those mid eighties were a bit hazy though. 1987's Chinese New Year was indeed at the SF Civic (1.29.87).

Can you imagine the circus in China? China wouldn't know what hit them!

Thanks for confirming the same - I always figured it was a nightmare dealing with visas and what not, and then there was a little incident in some square over there....

If I remember correctly, they were looking for corporate sponsorship that never materialized
